Signs and Road Markings — 5 Practice Questions
Signs and markings are the largest single topic on the license-conversion written test. You need to read meaning from shape and colour across the four sign families — regulatory, instruction, warning and guide — plus the markings painted on the road surface.
What the test actually targets is the pairs that look alike and mean different things: no-parking against no-stopping-or-parking, road-closed against no-vehicle-entry, a solid centre line against a dashed one. A true/false question puts that distinction into a single sentence and waits.
One reading habit is worth building before you start. In a true/false sentence the trap is usually a single qualifier — "always", "only", "unless a sign indicates otherwise". A great many road rules are defaults that a posted sign is allowed to override, so a statement that sounds right in general can be false as written, and one that sounds unreasonably strict can be exactly right. Find the qualifier first, then decide what the sign does to it.
The five questions below are in the same true/false format as the real test. Decide your answer before you reveal it. Each explanation names the article of the Road Traffic Act, or the section of the official rulebook, that it comes from.
The five questions
A round sign with a red border and a single white horizontal bar means 'No Entry' for vehicles.

A circular blue sign always indicates a prohibition or restriction.
Show the answer and explanation
Answer False
Explanation False. Blue signs are instruction/guide signs (e.g. designated direction, one-way). Prohibitions are generally shown by red-bordered signs.

A downward-pointing red triangle sign reading '止まれ' means you must make a complete stop.
Show the answer and explanation

A '徐行' sign means you must slow to a speed at which you can stop immediately.
Show the answer and explanation

A '車両横断禁止' sign means you are not allowed to make a left turn.
Show the answer and explanation
